Additional Information
Although I was born in the U.S., I spent my early childhood in Poland, before moving back to New York City at the age of eight where I was filled with excitement and anticipation. However, I quickly began to experience the challenges of adapting to a new country and learning English as my second language. This early experience taught me the importance of resilience, determination and the value of building meaningful connections with people from a multitude of different backgrounds and my acceptance at Columbia University CDM is a reflection of those years of hard work and one of my major accomplishments up to this point. In addition to completing an AEGD program this year which has helped me to gain a solid foundation of clinical experience, my passion for drawing portraits of my close friends and family has also had a significant positive impact on my path towards becoming a dentist.Initially, I faced difficulties in grasping the intricacies of the English language, making everyday communication very challenging. Thanks to the patience and understanding from my teachers, they helped me greatly to overcome these language barriers, such as taking time to sit with me individually beyond our scheduled reading classes to read National Geographic articles tor helping me translate the daily hot lunch menu. Additionally, my mom’s constant support at home, staying up with me countless nights writing Polish translations of the text of my homework assignments on post-it notes, having me find the correct answers in Polish and finally translate them back into English was critical for me to internalize the English vocabulary and syntax. Their unwavering support and empathy helped me foster my sensitivity towards others and made me realize how significant genuine connections can be in one’s life. These early experiences is what led me to dentistry - where the ability to connect with patients on a deeper level in order to comprehend their needs is crucial and which will help me guide them through their transformative journey that can, at times, span several years. Dentistry presents itself with a unique blend of science and artistry where attention to detail and an appreciation for the overall esthetics of the face are fundamental. Drawing portraits has honed my skills in these areas as well as it has granted me the ability to be able to embrace the essence of a person's character and emotions beyond their physical appearance. Similarly to my efforts to capture these aspects of my subjects in my drawings, as an associate dentist, I will be able to, not only improve a patient's oral health and to enhance their confidence and self-esteem, but to design smiles that reflect each patient's unique beauty. I'm excited to start my career path to working as a general dentist, where I will be able to utilize my artistic abilities, cultural sensitivity, and professional experiences to give my patients the best care possible. I'm committed and passionate to produce beautiful, harmonious smiles which will also reflect the resilience and determination that have shaped my own journey up to this point.
