I wish to remain active as an owner in dentistry for 15 more years. My career objectives are essentially the same as they were in 1987 when I graduated from Pitt Dental and after my AEGD certificate was gained from Eastman Dental Center. I have always wished to be my own boss...to own my own dental practice and to make it the best and most productive I can all within a philosophy of CANI, (constant and neverending improvement), a term I learned from Anthony Robbins in his many motivational courses and videos that I learned so much from. Dentistry is so important to the health and well-being of an individual. They derive so much self-esteem, joy, and pleasure if their smile and dentition are well cared for and well maintained. That responsibility needs to be taken very seriously by loving and talented dental professionals. I have proven to thousands of dental patients that they can depend on my expertise, love, and commitment to do what they want and need to be done to project self-confidence and prevent dental problems from interfering with a healthy and happy life before the dental disease becomes unmanageable. Essentially, I am and dentists are true gatekeepers of dental health and wellness.
I grew up in Northwest Pennsylvania about 70 miles north of Pittsburgh and graduated from Sharpsville High School near the top of my small about 125-member class. I knew since I was a sophomore in high school that I wanted to become a dentist because my father suffered from 7 different sets of dentures and never could eat and be comfortable with his smile. That influence and my talents with my hands as a musician playing the flute, as a baseball player, football player, and basketball player positioned me to believe I was more than capable to achieve academically and from a hand-eye coordination point of view in mastering college and dental school. I have been married for over 30 years to the same beautiful and loving person Kathy, who is also a dental professional; a dental hygienist. Kathy and I enjoy comedies, dramas, and adventure movies as a hobby. We take long walks together and have always been active members of both of our families and the many children brothers and sisters have had. We have been avid Pittsburgh sports fans and maintained that love to this day even after our graduation from dental professional schools.
After having graduated from Pitt Dental, I attended Eastman Dental Center to refine my surgical and cosmetic dental skills and to develop more efficiency and speed in doing endodontics and other procedures. Afterward, I began what would become a successful private practice career. It did not start that way as I opened a small dental practice from scratch and was in and out of business in less than one year. It was at that time that I decided and with the help of Anthony Robbin's inspirational works that I was not going to be denied owning my own practice. Many people would have quit possibly even left the profession. I never gave that one minute of thought, because I knew that I loved dentistry and belonged in it to help and serve patients. After a few years of working with several dental practices, my conviction and commitment to that end were reinforced. Put simply, I wanted to be my own boss to make decisions that I believed in and develop the kind of practice that respected the needs and wants of my patients with respect, and dignity, and in a way that my parents and God would be proud of. As a result, less than 3 years after my first office was closed, I started a small Transfer PA dental office from scratch and built it from 1 to 2 to 3 operatories. Then, I opened a second practice in Grove City Pa and a third in Hermitage Pa. After success for several years, the responsibilities and costs of three separate overheads, inspired me to consolidate the 3 locations into one office. That office gained national recognition and was called Spadent. Twenty-two state newspapers picked up the story of our unique concept and I was recognized in the first edition of New Beauty magazine in its first year of publication. It was a great effort and a great success in terms of it gained commendation from the Pennsylvania Dental Association and the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. It operated as a solo practice in Transfer Pa to Spadent from 1992-2005. My wife and I then moved to Virginia for 15 years, first I spent 2 years as an associate under Dr. Adam Foleck in his very successful Foleck Center at the time in 2 offices in Norfolk Virginia. As of 2023, Dr. Foleck has at least 5 locations and over 90 team members. I loved my two years at his offices and learned a great deal about management and dentistry while there. Still, I wanted to be my own boss and later purchased Colonial Heights Dental from a retiring dentist, Dr. Ralph Rutledge, and renamed his practice Colonial Heights Dental. I operated and owned that practice from 2008-2019. We collected depending on the year up to $1,100,000 in revenue. A personal life tragedy, involving a poorly built $630,000 flawed home we built in Midlothian Virginia created the need to close Colonial Heights dental and once again take a position within the dental community as an associate. I worked briefly with Dr. Geoirge Varkey, in Virginia, then for a short time with Eastern Virginia Cosmetic and General Dentistry before Covid rampaged much of the world and caused my wife and me to reconsider being away from our dear families; thus we decided to take 1 year away from dentistry to then move back to the Pittsburgh area in 2020. Since 2020, I have been associated first with Aspen Dental and owner George Monios then with Chestnut Hills Dental alongside Dr. Dillon Caines a young dentist from Canada whom I befriended and mentored as well. I am proud of my passion and perseverance in dentistry over the years. My skills have become refined and I practice a very contemporary style of dentistry, utilizing digital scanners such as iTero, Trios, and Cerec. I do rotary Endodontics and have done so since the 1990s. I mastered the art and science of cosmetic dentistry and have served well in oral surgery both simple and surgical extractions. I use a diode laser for troughing of crowns and I have refined my diagnostic skills over the course of time. In all associateships, I either improved productivity by 30-50% or better. Most recently I doubled the monthly income of the location I was working with Chestnut Hills Dental. I am again available to purchase and poised to be successful in practice ownership because of my proven record in clinical skill, doing what is right for patients, and my passion for the practice of contemporary dentistry.
I obtained my DMD degree from the University of Pittsburgh in 1987I passed the Northeast Regional Boards in 1988(I believe) having scored in the didactic area within the top 10% nationally.I have had licensure in both Virginia and Pennsylvania however, currently am active only in Pennsylvania.I have never been sanctioned in any way in either state I practiced in and have maintained the highest level of confidence from my patients and most coworkers who were ambitious and like-minded in their pursuit of dental excellence.
