My name is Marcel Acris, I am a 40-year-old male currently finishing my 4th year as a DDS student at Indiana school of dentistry, graduating on May 12, 2023. Growing up in my childhood home in Eastern Europe has had a major influence on my life and the person I am today. With an equal amount of excitement and trepidation, I immigrated alone to Spain at the age of 23. I was full of dreams and the sobering reality of the obstacles I would face. Still, these challenges were transformative and contributed to some of the most rewarding adventures of my life. After about 4 years in Spain, I immigrated to the United States to reunite with a girlfriend a meet in Spain. I re-enrolled in school in 2012 to build a career that encompassed everything I enjoyed doing. Dentistry ignites the passion I have for technology, science, and business. I love working with my hands and seeing immediate results from my work. I began volunteering at Trinity Free Clinic as a Spanish and Russian interpreter, dental instrument technician, and dental assistant, which allowed me great exposure to dentistry that I would not have otherwise received. I was able to observe dentists in various specialties and learn about techniques they use to approach intricate cases. During this time, I was also hired as a medical interpreter at St. Vincent Hospital where I have worked continuously for 9 years. Taking a full load of classes while working nights and helping my family economically back in the Republic of Moldova, introduced a new level of hurdles I had to overcome. I had to learn very quickly how to wisely manage family, money, and time while pursuing my career in dentistry. While working at the hospital, I have realized that there is no greater and more fulfilling reward than helping others. Serving as a facilitator of communication between physicians and patients allowed me to see how language barriers can lead to lapses in patient care. The time spent in the dental school has shaped me further and enabled me to learn, experience, and grow. As a student, I have especially enjoyed the hands-on lab work and being a teaching assistant (TA) for prosthodontic courses and implant courses. I would love to expand my knowledge beyond dental school. As a dental professional, it would be my greatest accomplishment to be fully integrated into the community I serve and to know that my service extends beyond my professional life. No matter where I end up practicing, I hope to bring my enthusiasm, work ethic and drive for self-improvement to excel in the field of dentistry and the community.
