My time spent as an EDDA has given me an advantage when it comes to patient care. Aside from clinical skills, I was able to learn ergonomics, patient positioning, and even the art of effective communication with the patient. I worked in a setting where I was exposed to a diverse patient population which included navigating different cultures, socioeconomic classes, and education levels. I worked with children and the elderly, as well as individuals with intellectual disabilities. As a result, in dental school I am able to place my focus on improving clinical skills and knowledge, as I didn’t have to work through the jitters of seeing my first patient. I see myself as someone who understands the significance of constructive feedback and how to use it to learn and improve. I have always been a leader in small group settings while understanding how important it is for members of the group to share ideas also. I am open to new opinions, beliefs, and ways of thinking. All of these characteristics I think will lead me to not only be a trusted clinician, but also colleague, coworker, and friend.

The relationship with the patient has always been central to my care philosophy. From the initial visit, I understand how important it is to build rapport by beginning to learn about the patient and their wants and desires. I am empathetic and patient; understanding that each person is an individual and requires individual care. I have always been a hard worker, having a job almost consistently since I was 15 years old. I am organized with a close attention to detail. I like to have a plan prior to each appointment, and it is not unlike me to have a sort of ‘checklist’ when planning my week. This allows me to be prepared for each person that sits in my chair and reduces frustration on the patients’ part.
