Additional Information
During the first part of my career, I would like to ideally work in a group practice with one or two other doctors. However, I am not opposed to being the sole doctor in a branch location and would feel comfortable doing so. I anticipate eventually choosing to become a partner or buying a practice down the line once I feel financially stable.
As a new graduate who took time between college and dental school, I feel like I have a stronger sense of what a true world work environment is like. As an assistant, I had to discuss private practice fees with patients, something most students are not used to. I also had the opportunity to spend time with our billing and coding department, and became familiar with most insurances. I am driven and hard working. I grew up on a farm in Pennsylvania, and have had a part time job almost continuously since the age of 12. I even worked during dental school as an art instructor at Painting with a Twist. I am confident in practice, but I also understand my limitations. I would love to have more exposure to endodontics, and for that reason, that will be one of the first CE courses I pursue.
Personally, I am a very easy to get along with and will mediate any conflicts early. During my externships, I never had any issues with staff or assistants. I still keep in touch with some of the doctors I worked with, and the one in Traverse City has been helping with my job search. I am upbeat and positive, and I have been told I should go into pediatrics (I do not want to do this exclusively), but I do enjoy working with kids and don't mind seeing the younger ones as long as it isn't an entire day of it. During my Muskegon rotation in dental school, I was doing a lot of work on kids around the age of six, even some who had never had a filling before.
More about me:
I moved back to Grand Rapids area with my boyfriend, who is also a dentist, and we have a dog named Barkley. In my free time, I enjoy cooking, painting and running. I have done multiple half marathons and a full marathon. I received my Michigan dentist license two weeks ago and started my job search then after deciding to stay.
Throughout my undergraduate studies at Lafayette College, I performed research in microbiology in the subject of biofilms. While completing my honors thesis my senior year, I served as a research mentor to two freshmen who went on to continue the work. I also worked as a teaching assistant in microbiology and general biology. I was the sole recipient of the Willis Roberts Hunt Biology Prize, which is the only award given at Lafayette College in the biology major.
Following graduation, I worked as a surgical assistant at an oral surgery and dental implant center with six talented oral surgeons for two years. There, I became familiar with cases ranging from simple extractions to full mouth rehabilitations using zygomatic implants.
During dental school, I was involved in the Special Care Dentistry Association, where I was president for two years. I started a collaboration for dental students to work with a group that provides activities for adults with special needs, as well as a collaboration with the Alzheimer's Association giving oral hygiene and hygiene modification presentations to caregivers caring for someone with Alzheiemer's Disease or dementia. I also was involved in the American Association of Public Health Dentistry, and I attended the midwest conference my second year.
In our curriculum, I chose the research pathway during dental school, and I worked closely with the Michigan General Practice Residency Director at the hospital, Dr. Stephanie Munz. I wrote a systematic review on the maintenance and complication management of implant prosthodontics for patients with neurodegenerative disease. The review won second place at the Special Care Dentistry Annual Meeting Research Competition in 2019.
